Finding Plus Size Costumes for Halloween

Finding a Halloween costume if you’re not exactly a size 2 has always been a challenge. Many stores simply carry a one-size-fits-all (yeah, right!) sizing system, and leave it at that. For many years, plus sized customers have been forced to either stay home, or break out the sewing machine to design a costume of their own. Well, with the advent of the internet, those days are no more. Many online retailers carry larger sizes now – and there are entire stores dedicated just to selling plus size costumes, and many of these stores actually offer a wide selection.

Be sure to order your costume well in advance. Many stores get busy around holiday seasons, and the busier they are, the greater a chance that they’ll make a mistake somewhere. If you’re going to accidentally receive someone else’s order (or if it ships with a problem, such as a hole or other defect), it might as well be early enough that you can send it back for a refund.

It’s always a good idea to see if the retailer has measurements available on their website for the costume, and to measure and compare yourself before ordering so you have a better idea of how it will fit. Also check the store’s return policy, just in case something is wrong or the item ends up not fitting after all. Some stores may pay shipping back to exchange or return, some may take exchanges or returns, but make you pay the shipping, and some retailers may have an all-sales-are-final policy, where even if an item is defective they still won’t exchange it for you.

Don’t forget the accessories! Many times costumes only include the basic items shown in the picture. If you’re ordering a pirate costume, make sure it actually comes with the eye patch. Make sure you’ve got the perfect shoes to go with your costume. You get the idea, just make sure everything you’ll need is lined up for the big day. Many retailers may sell the accessories you desire, or you may have to order them from some place else (or simply pick them up locally).

Modern plus size retailers carry a wide selection, from modest pirate costumes to something more along the lines of a schoolgirl, you can find anything you’re looking for in your size with some Google fancy work. Just Googling the type of costume you want along with the keyword “plus size” usually returns many results. You can use Google’s shopping search for even more detailed listings of who sales plus size costumes by clicking on the Shopping button at the top of your screen.

As stated before, the most important thing you can do is order well in advance. If something doesn’t fit, or there is a problem with your plus size costumes, you want to have plenty of time to return or exchange items as required.

With a little work, plus sized people can have great Halloween experiences too, without having to make their own costumes!
