Halloween Pet Costumes Selection Guide
Have you ever considered dressing up your dog as a firefighter? How about as superman? What about taking your prissy little dog and making her a cowgirl for Halloween?
These ideas may sound kind of wacky to those who have never dressed up a dog before, but forget what everyone things - it’s a lot of fun to dress your dog up for Halloween! And in the modern day of ecommerce, you have a million options to choose from.
Beyond what your local retail stores have, there is ebay, Amazon.com, and literally thousands of e-stores that specifically sell dog costumes for Halloween.
From cheerleader outfits, to iron man suits, anything you are looking for can be found online. If you can’t find it online, dog costumes are very easy to make!
Keep in mind, you don’t have to go all out. Even Wal-Mart sells capes (and other Halloween pet costumes) for dogs. Capes are unintrusive enough that no dog minds wearing it, and it dresses the dog up just enough without going overboard. It’s a good “gateway drug” to the dog costume addiction.
As said before, dog costumes can be made very easily. Patterns can be purchased over the internet, or in retail stores. The patterns themselves usually require so little fabric they are very inexpensive to make. You’ll want to choose a heavy duty, durable fabric however. Keep in mind your dog may decide to chew on any part of it exposed to him or her, so you have to keep that in mind for the design process. The nice thing about making them yourself, is you can choose every single color and every single detail of the costume. If anything needs tailored or modified for your specific dog, you can work that in to the design as needed.
You can also customize it as needed. For instance, consider sewing in place a couple reflective strips (the type joggers use) so that cars can more easily see your dog and avoid hitting it. You could even attach a small battery operated flasher to the back of the costume. Also keep in mind you’ll want your dog to be wearing a collar or a harness, so make sure the leash won’t get in the way of the outfit while you’re walking your dog.
Pet boutiques usually have a great selection of dog clothes and costumes if you don’t want to bother with making it yourself - but they may run as much as $60 or $100 a piece.
If you make your own, you can match your dog’s costume to the costume you will be wearing! Nothing’s cuter than matching outfits, and you both will be guaranteed to get lots of comments!
Keep in mind the temperature when you’re picking out your dogs costumes. You will probably all be doing a lot of walking, and dogs get hot very easily - remember, they’re not used to exercising in clothes! So have fun, enjoy dressing up your dog, and most importantly, get out there and enjoy this Halloween!
